Lynn contacted me at the beginning of the month about this article and sharing Kelly Lowe’s story with the world. Rape kits are collected at the time of the assault and when tested, DNA evidence contained inside rape kits can be an incredibly powerful tool to solve and prevent crime. It can identify an unknown assailant and confirm the presence of a known suspect. It can affirm the survivor’s account of the attack and discredit the suspect. It can connect the suspect to other crime scenes. It can exonerate innocent suspects.
Look at this beautiful little girl. Her name is Afua W. and she is a fun-loving child who has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
Afua loves music, playing with her toys, and blowing soap bubbles. (Hello! Who doesn’t love all of those things!?) Afua also loves to play outside and desperately wants to be able to keep up with her siblings. All of her siblings have bikes, and during the summer months, her family goes for walks and bike rides every day.
Friends – I’m asking for your help. There are approximately 8,000 toys out there still in need of a home before Christmas. 4,000 need to be purchased so the other 4,000 can be donated to one of the 35 charities that Stickman Stew and a bunch of my blogging friends have partnered with this year. Look at the faces of those little ones from Vogel Alcove in Dallas playing with their new toys.
Congress has introduced a new bill known as the Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act, which would allow for adoption discrimination across the country under the guise of religious freedom.
I am a Christian, but I am also a firm believer that every human has the right to happiness, love, and family regardless of their race, nationality, sexual orientation, gender, whatever. People are People – end of discussion. When I see an injustice underway, I add my voice along with others to bring about a change in our society.
My eldest son, Jonathan, is a sensitive soul, although he does not show it very often. I believe he is in that awkward stage where he is attempting to define the man that he will be in the future. Does he go with the tough, ‘I-don’t-give-a-crap-about-anything’ attitude, or does he go with caring about others and having compassion for those less fortunate than himself? He’s shown a mixture of both, but when it comes to the homeless people in Richmond, his heart is on his sleeve.
I have to admit, I love “feel good” stories such as these from my friends at the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). I received this in my e-mail messages this morning, and I just had to share.
Betty, who is around 25 years old, was kept in a small enclosure at a zoo in southern Romania.
On March 30th I received an email from Becky Bond, Political Director for CREDO Action from Working Assets that, quite frankly, pissed me off. It was regarding Mozilla’s new CEO, Brendan Eich. It didn’t bother me that they named him CEO, what bothered me is that Mozilla (maker of the world’s second most popular browser – Firefox) is an organization that has always demonstrated a deep commitment to openness and equality – yet they appointed a CEO who publicly supports the denial of equal rights for gays and lesbians under the law.
