Lynn contacted me at the beginning of the month about this article and sharing Kelly Lowe’s story with the world. Rape kits are collected at the time of the assault and when tested, DNA evidence contained inside rape kits can be an incredibly powerful tool to solve and prevent crime. It can identify an unknown assailant and confirm the presence of a known suspect. It can affirm the survivor’s account of the attack and discredit the suspect. It can connect the suspect to other crime scenes. It can exonerate innocent suspects.
Look at this beautiful little girl. Her name is Afua W. and she is a fun-loving child who has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
Friends – I’m asking for your help. There are approximately 8,000 toys out there still in need of a home before Christmas. 4,000 need to be purchased so the other 4,000 can be donated to one of the 35 charities that Stickman Stew and a bunch of my blogging friends have partnered with this year. Look at the faces of those little ones from Vogel Alcove in Dallas playing with their new toys.
Congress has introduced a new bill known as the Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act, which would allow for adoption discrimination across the country under the guise of religious freedom.
My eldest son, Jonathan, is a sensitive soul, although he does not show it very often. I believe he is in that awkward stage where he is attempting to define the man that he will be in the future. Does he go with the tough, ‘I-don’t-give-a-crap-about-anything’ attitude, or does he go with caring about others and having compassion for those less fortunate than himself? He’s shown a mixture of both, but when it comes to the homeless people in Richmond, his heart is on his sleeve.
On March 30th I received an email from Becky Bond, Political Director for CREDO Action from Working Assets that, quite frankly, pissed me off. It was regarding Mozilla’s new CEO, Brendan Eich. It didn’t bother me that they named him CEO, what bothered me is that Mozilla (maker of the world’s second most popular browser – Firefox) is an organization that has always demonstrated a deep commitment to openness and equality – yet they appointed a CEO who publicly supports the denial of equal rights for gays and lesbians under the law.
I believe in karma. I’ve seen it at work too many times to not believe. Not sure what karma is? The dictionary explains karma as “the total effect of a person’s actions and conduct during the successive phases of the person’s existence, regarded as determining the person’s destiny.” Simply put, every action you take in your life has an effect on the world. As my grandmother used to say, “you reap whatever you put out into the world.” As I tell my kids, “what you put out into the world will come back to you tenfold” to teach them that being horrid, nasty, or spiteful only brings those things back to you. When you put forth an effort to be kind, loving, and giving – the world in turn will give those back to you.
